Learning to improve network efficiency without additional hardware

Anyone can upgrade his network by spending a couple of hundreds or thousands dollars on it. And no matter how advanced the applied technologies are, tomorrow there will be something else, even more advanced and up-to-date. But there are some techniques and ways to reconfigure already existing hardware, which help to trigger site loading speed.

Rearrange system bus load
Avoid keeping all your I/O for your NIC (Network Information Center) together with hard drives and tape drives on the same bus. The majority of servers have several buses, and you may optimize them. Note that the information doesn’t come directly from hard drive to the information center on the same bus – everything corresponds with CPU. So it is better to have them on separate busses to reduce contention.

Get rid of unnecessary network protocols
If you are a user with NetWare IPX,  Appletalk, NetBEUI or TCP/IP protocols connected with each interface of your server, clean up the ones that are not applied.

Stripe the disk
Have several hard drives? Why not combining them into a single logical drive where the information will be “striped” through them. That may greatly increase performance. Such method is also called "RAID 0"

Optimize WAN bandwidth with the help of new models
Surf the Net, and you will find out that there are various models that change networking pattern, which results onto lower latency or WAN appliance. Among such methods are content delivery networks, WAFS, web services and terminal services.

Change TCP/IP settings
If there are no obstacles for website functioning, but you think WAN throughput is still not sufficient enough, apply some bandwidth delay product, and don’t forget about window size.
