Dedicated servers vs VPS: dramatic difference or close similarity?

When dedicated servers appeared, life of web specialists became noticeably simpler. Effective, fast, all-purpose – seems like this type of IT service is perfect. But since VPS (Virtual Private Server) was introduced, site developers started arguing, incapable of deciding which type of server is more effective and worth paying for.

The idea of both server types is that they allow operating huge sites without problems and offer excellent performance. Indeed, both kinds are ideal for IT business, with settings and features suitable for web applications and sites of any size. The main difference is that when you lease a dedicated server, the entire physical server is yours (you can manage hardware and control over storage as you like), while VPS is a kind of software that operates in virtual environment that shares storage and hardware. It means that several virtual servers work simultaneously on one physical server, and users have to share processors, memory, bandwidth, etc. Though, VPS provider isolates you from all other “roommates”, so you don’t notice this sharing exists. Thus, VPS is the golden middle between shared and dedicated servers.

Server configuration is another burning issue. Deciding between VPS and dedicated server options, mind that generally dedicated servers are more powerful.

As for performance, both VPS and dedicated servers are effective. But in some cases, VPS is just not enough for huge sites to function properly, so a dedicated server will be useful when you increase resource loading.

The conclusion is simple: if you need something more powerful than shared hosting, but not ready to dig into purse, VPS would be the best variant. But still there is nothing more effective than dedicated servers that are chosen by most developers of huge sites.
