5 Tips How to make your dedicated server 100% secure

A dedicated server by itself is a safe solution, because it defends your project from “noisy neighbors” – the ones who steal bandwidth, CPU, storage and other valuable resources. Some of them make your website and IP vulnerable because of malignant actions and hackers’ attacks. Being the sole owner of a server you solve one problem, but there are many other threats.

Find out how to organize a full-fledged barrier against cybercriminals.

  1. Do not use password to access
To access their servers, users often apply root account password, but it isn’t always a safe method. You should generate and set up SSH key so that the client could access dedicated hosting server further – it will decrease the risk of being hacked with your password.
  2. Deploy dedicated SSL
Quite often, you get a security warning when trying to access the server first time via IP and your port. All cPanel servers feature default self-signed SSL on them, but this option is not truly secure, and you are likely to get warning errors. Installation of a dedicated trusted SSL on the server with WHM or SSH root will be very helpful, because it allows avoiding this error.
  3. Perform regular scanning for viruses and malware
Dedicate a bit of your time to scan your server and reveal malware and viruses. This is a must. It is recommended to organize checks 1-2 times a month. Of course, you should also find a solution to remove malware and viruses. Consult with your dedicated host server provider: most likely, it will suggest appropriate anti-virus software for your dedicated server.
  4. Use a trusted ISP to access the server
Do not access your dedicated web hosting server in a cyber café, or some other similar place where public WiFi zones are offered. If possible, get your personal static IP from the ISP provider and configure it to firewall of your web hosting server while blocking other access. Sometimes it may happen that you wouldn’t be able to access your dedicated server as you don’t have the same ISP as was configured for root access to the firewall.
  5. Pay attention to server monitoring and processing
Most users treat web server process and monitoring carefree. You just set the web-site up, and leave it without checking for months, or even years. Warnings and server processes are simply ignored. However, it is crucial to check processes and error logs every week to make sure that your website is clean and safe.

With these tips you will be able to maintain server’s health in the long term without spending much time and money on premium services.
